GUAM, Azerbaijan mull expansion of coop

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov received GUAM Secretary General Valery Chechelashvili, who visited Azerbaijan to observe the presidential election, the Foreign Ministry reported.

During the visit, the sides discussed the current state of cooperation between Azerbaijan and GUAM, and the possibilities of further expanding of this cooperation.

The significance of the coordinating activity between the GUAM member-states was also underscored.

Chechelashvili spoke about the organization's activity and cooperation with other international organizations and countries.

During the meeting, discussions and consultations on GUAM's expected events were carried out.

GUAM was established by the post-Soviet countries in 1997 during the EU presidential summit at Strasbourg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the organisation and left four years later. A decision was made to rename GUAM as an international organisation called 'Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM', at the body's first summit in Kiev in 2006.
