By Nigar Orujova

Azerbaijan has signed an agreement on cooperation in the fields of culture, education, science and sports with Spain during a visit to the country by an Azerbaijani delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

During the visit, political consultations were held with State Secretary on Foreign Affairs Gonzalo de Benito Secades.

Khalafov noted the two countries' ample opportunities and great potential to develop the cooperation and stressed the importance of expanding interaction in the area of humanitarian aid, as well as energy and economic cooperation.

The deputy minister spoke of Azerbaijan's large-scale projects in which Spanish business people could participate.

Discussions also focused on regional and international issues of mutual interest and the situation in the South Caucasus region.

According to Secades, Spain supports strengthening of relations between the EU and Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijani delegation held a number of meetings during the visit to mull bilateral relations in various fields.

Spain reaffirmed its support for Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity and fair position on the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Secades said during a visit to Azerbaijan earlier in November that the visiting Spanish delegation had discussed opening of the country's embassy in Azerbaijan.

According to Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, Spain's presidency at the OSCE was a turning point in the relations between Spain and Azerbaijan, although they can certainly be deepened.
