Aliyev pardons 99
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev enacted a decree on Friday
pardoning 99 prisoners.
The remaining jail terms of 93 of the inmates were cancelled, and
six others saw their imprisonment sentences invalidated
altogether.
The amnesty includes Mushfig Huseynov, a reporter of the opposition
Bizim Yol newspaper. Huseynov was arrested in July 2007 on charges
of taking a bribe and subsequently convicted for five years. He is
suffering from a severe tuberculosis condition.
Thousands of people have been released under President Aliyev’s
pardon decrees so far.*
