Azerbaijan aims to develop its own technology of chip production.

To this end, the country plans to allocate over $7 million for working on the technology of developing chips based on thin layers.

The advanced technology research center of the Communications and High Technologies Ministry is now strengthening training capacities for mastering technology of chips production.

Launching chip production in Azerbaijan will allow local producers to use them in the electronics industry.

The research center believes that local producers should stop importing chips in near future. It aims to create a ground which contributes to the emergence of competitive products that will also contribute to the economic development of the country.

Equipment for the production of chips has already been partially delivered to Azerbaijan. Purchasing of another batch of equipment amounting to six million manats is under consideration at present.

The research center said, the chip manufacturing technology sphere is a closed area, and many of the world scientific centers are reluctant to share their achievements. Thus, the country aims to develop its own chip technologies.

The chips which are planned to be produced can be used in telephone handsets, LED (light-emitting diode) light sources, micro and nano-electronic devices, biological systems, defense, and other areas.

Azerbaijan is one of the leading countries in ICT development in the CIS. Azerbaijan's ICT ministry called 2013 the most successful year in the last decade in the development of ICT in the country. The sector demonstrated a 14 percent growth last year.

Investment in the development of the ICT sector in Azerbaijan is expected to rise to $4 billion by 2020.
