Azerbaijan, which is keen on developing the non-oil sector and diversifying the country’s economy, can be proud of its power sector. Today, the country is able to fully meet its own energy needs, and seeks to supply power to the European market.

Currently, the country’s energy system is based on the capacity of 14 thermal and over 10 hydro power plants. Over the past 10 years, the power grid of the country increased by 40 percent, which allows not only cover domestic needs, but also forms export potential of the country.

Azerenergy JSC, which is the largest electrical power producer in Azerbaijan, generated 9.42 billion kWh of electricity in January-May 2017, as compared to 9.2 billion kWh during the same period of 2016, the company reported.

The report notes that the power plants of the company produced almost 1.52 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in May.

Azerenergy JSC produced 22.6 billion kWh of electricity in 2016, as compared to about 22.5 billion kWh produced in 2015.

The output of hydropower stations was 572.7 million kWh in January-April 2017, which is 0.7 percent lower than in the first third of 2016.

Electricity generation at thermal power stations amounted to 7.06 billion kWh, which is 4.8 percent more than a year earlier.

The output at the hydropower stations amounted to 1.9 billion kWh in 2016, at the thermal power stations – 20.05 billion kWh.

Power generation allows Azerbaijan to create an annual export potential of several billion kWh. To export surplus electricity, Azerbaijan eyes several major projects, including the Energy Bridge Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey, which will allow Azerbaijan to export to Europe about 700 MW of electricity a year.
