By Trend

As part of special operations in the Istanbul police, 22,987 people were dismissed from the force, for reportedly having ties with the Fethullah Gülen movement, the Istanbul main security department said in a message on December 12.

Following the 2016 military coup attempt in Turkey, the investigation revealed the Fethullah Gülen movement supporters inside the Istanbul police.

Turkish authorities are accusing Fethullah Gulen, who lives in the US, of supporting the attempted coup.

The message from the police said that all those, dismissed from the police force had direct contacts with representatives of the Gulen movement, the message said.

On July 15, 2016, Turkish authorities said a military coup attempt took place in the country as a group of servicemen announced about transition of power to them. However, the rebelling servicemen started to surrender July 16 and Turkish authorities said the coup attempt failed.

More than 250 people were killed during the attempted coup.
