SOCAR continues development of large Caspian gas field

Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR is considering the installation of second platform in the Umid field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, a source in the company told Trend news agency.

The source said that at the present time, work is underway on the drilling of a third well in the field. Previously, two exploration wells were being drilled there, one of which is currently in operation; the extracted gas and condensate are sent to shore via underwater infrastructure.

"At present, well depth is 600 meters," the source said.

According to the source, drilling will be completed in the first half of 2013.

According to SOCAR specialists, the reserves of the Umid field are more than 200 billion cubic meters of gas and 40 million tons of condensate.

The Umid field is located 75 kilometres away from Baku situated 40 kilometres from the shore. Geophysical work was first conducted here in 1953 and repeatedly in 1972. Nine wells were drilled from 1977 to 1992 with no results.
