Baku, GUAM eye cooperation issues

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov received Altay Efendiyev, Secretary General of the GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development on February 8, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
The sides discussed the development of economic-trade relations and sectorial cooperation within the working groups among the Member States in the framework of the GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development.
Mammadyarov stressed the contribution of Azerbaijan, as the current chair of the GUAM Organization, to the development of cooperation among the Member States in the fields of transport, tourism, energy, information and communication technologies.
They also exchanged views on the issues of mutual interest.
Azerbaijan has undertaken chairmanship at the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development from Ukraine for the next four-year term. Altay Efendiyev, former Azerbaijani ambassador to Spain, replaced the Georgian diplomat Valery Chechelashvili in this position.
The international regional organization established by Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine GUAM has a free trade zone, Virtual Center for fight against organized crime and operates other structures.
During Azerbaijan’s presidency GUAM is expected to create a concept of transport transit corridor, and expand cooperation on specific projects with Japan and the U.S.
