By Aynur Jafarova

President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on the establishment of a presidential award for youth on July 2.

According to the decree, six presidential awards worth a total of 10,000 manats will be instituted for youth who excell in science, culture, as well as literature and art, education and social activities.

The Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers was instructed to approve the image of a diploma, a sign and its certificate for the presidential award for youth in three months and to inform the President to that end.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports was ordered to solve the issues pertaining to the presidential decree.

Currently the youth policy has become an important and integral part of Azerbaijan's state policy. The main purposes of the government's youth policy are to create suitable conditions for physical, mental and spiritual development of young people, to assist in applying their skills and abilities, and resolving their social problems, as well as ensure the protection of their rights.

According to the national legislation dated May 5, 2007, people aged between 14 and 29 are considered young in Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani youth stands out for its close participation in all areas of public life and plays an important role in political, economic, humanitarian and social activities.

Last year, 117 projects were implemented with the Youth Fund's support, and the amount for the programs made up 1,950,000 manats. This year, about 5 million manats were allocated to the Fund at the President's initiative. 2 million manats have already been allocated for the approved projects.

The youth policy is reflected in relevant legal documents and is carried out by government agencies. The main goal of the state youth programs approved in 2005 and 2011 is to properly capitalize on the country's potential for the benefit of young people.

Nationwide youth forums are conducted regularly and 2007 had been announced Year of Youth in the country.

Each year February 2 is marked in Azerbaijan as Youth Day.
