Worldwide protests to condemn Khojaly massacre
A series of events will be held in about 30 countries around the globe as part of the international campaign aiming to condemn the Khojaly massacre committed by Armenians against Azerbaijanis in 1992, says the secretary-general of the Islamic Conference Youth Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation.
Elshad Iskandarov told a news conference Friday that as part of the Justice for Khojaly campaign, protesters will release 613 baloons with Khojaly victims’ names outside the British parliament building in London on February 24.
Also, a clip called Justice for Khojaly featuring well-known US rapper Toni Blackman and Azerbaijan's Deyirman band, has been made. The clip will be presented to the public, along with various events to be held in cities around the world, including Moscow, Berlin, Mexico, Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris, and Jakarta.
The book titled "Garabagh: questions and facts", will be presented in the Grand National Assembly, Turkey’s parliament, in Ankara on February 25, and the "Garabagh diary" book by Russian writer Yuri Pompeyev in Moscow on March 1.
Iskandarov said the Justice for Khojaly events seek to draw international attention to a petition campaign addressed to world leaders. The signature collection campaign, which will be coordinated through the www.justiceforkhojaly.org website, will appeal to the US President and Congress, the European Union and European Parliament, the Council of Europe Secretary-General and the CE Parliamentary Assembly.
The Forum secretary-general said the petition allows a citizen of any country to call on an international organization or a country’s leadership to recognize the Khojaly carnage as a crime against humanity and to advocate for prosecuting the culprits. The signature campaign will last one year and its outcomes will be submitted to the heads of the organizations in question upon its completion.
The Justice for Khojaly campaign was initiated in February 2009 by Leyla Aliyeva, the youth forum’s senior coordinator for inter-cultural dialog. The initiative aims to inform the world community about the tragedy and achieve granting it due political assessment on the world stage.
Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war in the early 1990s. On February 25-26, 1992, Armenian forces attacked unarmed civilians in Khojaly with the support of the Russian troops. 613 people were brutally killed, while 1,275 taken captives, 487 became handicapped and 150 remain missing. Overall, the war claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about a million Azerbaijanis. Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan’s internationally-recognized territory since then. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.*
