Germany to aid labor protection
The German government will provide assistance to Azerbaijan in regulating labor relations. A relevant memorandum of understanding was signed by Minister of Labor and Social Security Fizuli Alakbarov and his counterpart Franz Thonnes in Baku on Monday.
The five-year memo covers issues on labor protection, ways of bringing labor relations in the country to high standards and stepping up citizens' social security.
Alakbarov told reporters after the signing ceremony that German businessmen were working in various fields of the Azerbaijani economy and Azerbaijan could capitalize on their experience in the regulation of labor relations at home.
260 German nationals are working in the country, with most of them involved in the energy sector. The rest of them are engaged in construction and the services sector.
The minister said 90 per cent of Germans working in Azerbaijan lived in the country illegally.
"We demand their registration," he said, adding that the issue was discussed at the meeting with German representatives.
Franz Thonnes, Parliamentary Secretary of State of the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, said the attention being paid in Azerbaijan to advancing the social sector had given an impetus to deepening cooperation between the two countries.
"Cooperation is this field is pivotal. A country's economy is strong when business activity is carried out properly," he added.
