The Council of Europe has now trained 20 trainers from among Azerbaijani lawyers and human rights defenders to apply the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the Revised European Social Charter (RESC), with a particular focus on anti-discrimination standards,AzerTag state news agency reported.

The last of three four-day training sessions for Trainers took place at Grand Hotel Europe in Baku on February20-23.

Twenty lawyers and human rights defenders were selected for training via competition to share their experiences with colleagues through a series of cascade trainings, which will start in March 2014. The newly certified trainers will continue to train others, even after the joint project of the Council of Europe and European Union is completed.

"This activity is one of the most important activities within the capacity building project for lawyers and human rights defenders, and I believe that the advocates and human rights defenders attending this programme have obtained essential benefit from the shared knowledge and they will put this knowledge and information into practice and share it with the legal community through cascade training sessions that will happen during upcoming month," said Teymur Malik-Aslanov, the Acting Head of the Council of Europe Office in Azerbaijan.

In addition, Elchin Khalafov, the Acting Rector of the Justice Academy of the Azerbaijan Republic, mentioned: "Within this programme, the lawyers were trained as trainers and we hope that they will contribute to the work of the Justice Academy in application of the European Convention of Human Rights in local level." The Justice Academy of the Republic of Azerbaijan is the key local partner in this project.

This activity is organized within the framework of the Council of Europe and European Union Joint Programme "Strengthening the capacity of lawyers and human rights defenders for domestic application of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and of the Revised European Social Charter (RESC)". It is a regional project implemented in Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
