Preparations for the grand event, the final match of 2018-2019 UEFA Europa League, are underway in Baku.
There are several facilities which must be ideally ready for the event in terms of comfort, safety and flexibility. Along with the Baku Olympic Stadium, hotels, roads and restaurants, the Heydar Aliyev International Airport, which first of all will welcome the football fans, should be fully prepared to meet huge crowds of guests.
Therefore, Heydar Aliyev International Airport has prepared a special action plan to receive a large number of aircraft and passengers for the period of UEFA Europa League Final in Baku. All services of the Airport will operate in enhanced mode.
Taking into account that the capacity of the Airport is 10,000 passengers per hour, no airline will be denied operation of regular and charter flights.
There are already over 45 requests for charter flights on May 28 and May 29 confirmed by Heydar Aliyev International Airport, including 16 flights by business aviation, two flights for football teams, and ten flights for fans of the football clubs.
Moreover, Turkish Airlines, Air Arabia, Fly Dubai, ISRair, Jazeera Airways and other airlines requested additional flights.
Thus, during the UEFA Europa League Final, all conditions will be created at Heydar Aliyev International Airport to ensure smooth operation of the flights and flow of many passengers through the terminal.
Heydar Aliyev International Airport has a huge experience as in past years Baku became the host of numerous exciting competitions such as Eurovision Song Contest in2012, 1st European Games in 2015, 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in 2017, Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grands Prix, etc.
As for statistics, last year, Heydar Aliyev International Airport set a new record for passenger traffic: it served a total of 4.43 million passengers, which is 9 percent higher than in 2017. A total of 3.81 million passengers were carried on international flights and 620,000 passengers - on regional flights.
The terminal of the Airport features giant wooden cocoons designed by Turkish architecture studio Autoban. The Airport has been listed among the top three unusual airports in the world, according to Hi-Tech.
In 2017 and 2018, Heydar Aliyev International Airport was named the best airport among those of CIS countries for the level of services provided and was awarded the maximum rating of 5 Stars according to Skytrax World Airport Awards.
In 2019, the Airport was named the best airport with passenger traffic up to 10 million according to Sky Travel Awards.
