Two killed as military unit attacked in Turkey

Members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) have attacked a military unit in Turkey’s Mardin province, leaving two dead and 14 servicemen injured, Yeni Safak newspaper reported March 4.

Reportedly, Turkish armed forces launched large-scale operations against PKK after the attack.

The PKK has in recent months become active in the south-east of Turkey, and its attacks on military units and police stations have increased.

Over 200 Turkish servicemen were killed in clashes with the PKK in 2015.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which demands the creation of an independent Kurdish state, has continued for over 25 years and has claimed more than 40,000 lives.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist group by the UN and the European Union.
