Three Iranian South Pars gas field phases come on stream

Some 10.7 billion cubic meters of gas from phases 15, 16, and 18 of the South Pars gas field have been injected into the national gas distribution network, Reza Forouzesh, director of phases 15 and 16 development project said.

He added that about $6.5 million barrels of gas condensates from the fields have also been delivered to the country’s oil terminals.

Forouzesh stated that $6 billion has been allocated to the development project, adding that Phase 15 development is 98 percent while Phase 16 development is 98.2 percent complete.

The related offshore pipeline is 98.53 percent, he asserted, adding that the refinery is 97.7, and the drilling is 93.2 percent complete.

Phase 15 is heading toward materializing its nominal capacity of 100 billion cubic feet for each well, the official said, noting that so far eight wells have been made ready for operation.

Phases 15 and 16 are aimed at producing 50 million cubic meters of natural gas, 77,000 barrels of gas condensates, and 400 metric tons of sulfur per day. They are also to produce 1.05 million metric tons of liquid gas (propane and butane) and one million metric tons of ethane each year to feed petrochemical units.

Currently, 72 percent of Iran’s domestically consumed gas equal to 300 million cubic meters a day is extracted from the South Pars. Iran intends to boost the field’s output by 100 million cubic meters a day by March.

The South Pars / North Dome field is a natural gas condensate field located in the Persian Gulf. It is the world's largest gas field, shared between Iran and Qatar. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the field holds an estimated 1,800 trillion cubic feet (51 trillion cubic meters) of in-situ natural gas and some 50 billion barrels (7.9 billion cubic meters) of natural gas condensates.
