Georgian parliament holds consultations over General Courts bill

The Georgian Parliament held consultations on the bill 'On General Courts' on Wednesday.

"The procedure of submission of six candidacies to the Council of Justice which has to be elected by parliament should be defined by regulation. So it was considered it would be more logical and fair that the parties will in the first instance know the formulation of changes included in the rules," member of the parliamentary majority Tina Khidasheli said.

In turn, a member of the parliamentary minority David Darchiashvili thinks it necessary to take into account the opinion of the Venice Commission.

"We are at a stage where we can get an association agreement with the EU, which includes free trade. This would take us one step towards a visa-free regime and we may receive a legal and political method of entry into the EU. However for this to happen, we must take into account the opinion of the Venice Commission, which is critical to the existing legislation," Darchiashvili said.

Meanwhile, if parliament passes the bill in its current form, the Georgian president is not going to sign it.
