Russian govt approves agreement on military base in Kyrgyzstan

The Russian government has approved an agreement between Russia and Kyrgyzstan on the status and terms of a Russian military base stay in Kyrgyzstan and a protocol on cooperation between the two countries in the military field.

The documents were presented to Russian President Vladimir Putin for ratification, KirTAG news agency reported with reference to the website of the Russian government.

A relevant decree was signed by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The provisions of the agreement and the protocol reportedly provide for a Russian military presence in Kyrgyzstan for 20 years.

"They also provide for legal regulation of issues related to the deployment and operation of the joint Russian military base on Kyrgyz territory at an international level," the statement said.

The agreement and the protocol were signed in Bishkek on September 20, 2012 during a visit of the Russian president to Kyrgyzstan.

The Kyrgyz Parliament adopted a law on ratification of the agreement on the status and terms of the Russian military base stay in Kyrgyzstan on December 13, 2012, and it was signed by President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev on December 19.
