The transfer of non-recognized borders of Georgia's separatist region of South Ossetia, which has affected the Baku-Supsa pipeline, is fully resolved, Georgian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Teymuraz Sharashenidze told journalists on August 7.

“The borders [of the breakaway region] can be transferred illegally, we consider such action as a provocation of those who are interested in creating tensions, particularly in the Georgian-Azerbaijani relations,” the diplomat noted.

He also said that Georgia has other methods to protect the route of the pipeline as well.

Earlier, Kakha Kaladze, Georgian Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister said that if problems with the Baku-Supsa pipeline occur, the government will use the alternative project.

“Construction of a new 1,500-1,600-meter area is the case,” Kaladze stressed.

Azerbaijani oil is delivered to world markets via such pipelines as Baku-Supsa (Black Sea), Baku-Novorossiysk (Black Sea) and Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (Mediterranean Sea).

The Baku-Supsa pipeline carries Azerbaijan's oil brand of Azeri Light, produced in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli block of fields in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea. The operator of the pipeline and the development of the field is British BP. The length of the pipeline, launched into operation in 1999, is 830 kilometers.

Azerbaijan and Georgia, which enjoy strong historical ties and strategic partnership, have brought the cooperation in various fields to a higher level in recent years.

The cooperation in the energy and transportation fields is one of main areas of collaboration between Baku and Tbilisi.

Georgia, which is one of the closest allies of Azerbaijan in the region, is an active participant of the large-scale international economic projects initiated by Azerbaijan
