Azerbaijan, Cambodia eye expanded energy cooperation

By Nigar Abbasova

Resource-rich Azerbaijan, which is constantly seeking potential energy markets, expands its energy cooperation with Cambodia.

The Southeast Asian state has invited Azerbaijan, which possesses vast experience in the field of energy to help develop Cambodia’s prospective oil and gas industry.

The issue of bolstering ties was high on agenda during the meeting between Azerbaijan`s Ambassador to Cambodia Anar Imanov and Cambodian Mines and Energy Minister Suy Sem.

Imanov, addressing the meeting highlighted the official visit of the Cambodian Prime Minister to Azerbaijan in 2014 and stressed the importance of this trip in terms of the development of relations.

The minister, in turn, invited the Azerbaijani companies to develop oil fields in Cambodia.

Cambodia has oil and gas reserves, but they must be assessed, explored and developed. The country is now promoting investments in its extractive industries, while a number of licenses have already been granted to international companies for petroleum exploration.

Certain areas of the country have shown great potential, as preliminary exploration has led to positive results, and Cambodia is expected to commence exploration of a number of blocks in the near future.

Bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Cambodia increased in recent times. Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral consultations between the countries was signed in 2014, the year, which marked the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Cambodia
