Energy security, one of the key tasks for any country in the world, is in the core of discussions during the ongoing 23rd World Energy Congress in Istanbul.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, speaking at the event, said Turkey together with Azerbaijan will strengthen Europe’s energy security thanks to the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC).

The minister said the two countries are currently engaged in the implementation of the Trans Anatolian pipeline (TANAP) [transport corridor to supply natural gas from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz field to Turkey and onwards to Europe], while realization of the project will strengthen energy security of Europe.

The TANAP project, along with the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP) and Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) form the elements of the Southern Gas Corridor, which in turn, is one of the priority energy projects for the EU.

The SGC is currently one of the biggest construction projects with a value of $45 billion, while its realization will contribute to enhancing the EU’s energy security and diversification of its gas supply routes.

Yildirim said Turkey will continue implementation of big projects, mentioning successful realization of such energy projects as the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC), Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum, Blue Stream.

Energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkey is developing steadily. Azerbaijan, with its tremendous hydrocarbon resources, gets the opportunity to access the global markets via Turkey. While Turkey, with its advantageous strategic location is considered to be a key player not only for its region that is central to many critical energy issues, but also for the global energy sphere.

The 23rd World Energy Congress is underway in Istanbul October 9-13 at the initiative of Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak under the auspices of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
