President Aliyev offers condolences to Italy’s president, prime minister

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has extended condolences to Italian President Sergio Mattarella over the recent passenger train crash in the south of Italy, Trend reported.

“I was deeply saddened by the news of a heavy loss of life as a result of the passenger train crash in the south of your country,” said President Aliyev in his letter of condolence. “On behalf of the people of Azerbaijan and on my own behalf, I extend my deepest condolences to you, the families and loved ones of those who died and the people of Italy, and wish the injured the swiftest possible recovery.”

President Aliyev also offered condolences to Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi over the tragedy.

“I was deeply saddened by the news of a heavy loss of life and injuries in a passenger train crash in the south of Italy,” said the president. “On behalf of the people of Azerbaijan and on my own behalf, I extend my deepest condolences to you, the families and loved ones of those who died, and wish the injured the swiftest possible recovery.”

Two passenger trains collided head-on in the Puglia region of southern Italy on Tuesday morning, killing at least 25 people and injuring dozens more, some of them critically.

The crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. on a single track running through an olive grove between the towns of Andria and Ruvo di Puglia.
