An Azerbaijani archaeological expedition jointly with representatives of the German Archaeological Institute has discovered a treasure of copper coins weighing 2.7 kilograms to the south-east of Kamiltepe on the intersection of the Agjabadi, Fizuli and Khojavend regions of Azerbaijan.

Aydin Mammadov, an employee of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences' (ANAS) Museum of History, said these metallic coins were minted by Azerbaijan's Atabegs Abu Bakr and Uzbek in the late 12th and early 13th centuries.

Moreover, about 13 kilograms of volcanic glass obsidian and coins minted by the Seljuks in the 1070s were found in this area. The image of a horse rider is particularly attractive. In the near future the coins will be refined and studied.

According to a senior representative of the Azerbaijan Institute of Archeology and Ethnography, Candidate of Historical Sciences Tavakkul Aliyev, extensive excavations are underway in the Fizuli, Beylagan, Khojavend and Agjabadi regions.

About 120 monuments covering an extensive historical period discovered in the region refer to the period ranging from the Early Neolithic age to the Middle Ages. The monuments are used for the study of the ancient history of Azerbaijan and the Middle Ages.

Archaeological research has been carried out in the mentioned regions by a joint Azerbaijani-German expedition since 2009.

Earlier, the archaeologists found new cultural monuments during an archaeological expedition to Azerbaijan's ancient city of Gabala, which was the capital of Caucasian Albania many centuries ago. The expedition was held with the support of SEBA (Seoul-Baku) Azerbaijan-Korean Cultural Exchange Association.
