Egyptian cell firm severs ties with rebel region after Baku’s protest

The Azerbaijani government has issued a protest to Egypt urging to stop the cooperation of Egyptian cellular provider Mobinil with a company illegally operating in the Armenia-occupied territories, according to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry.
After the protest note was issued by the Azerbaijani embassy in the country, the cooperation in providing roaming services between Mobinil and Karabakh Telecom was halted, the ministry said.
The protest note said such collaboration tramples on international law, saying "interference with Azerbaijan’s telecommunication space" is a violation of the country’s territorial integrity.
Earlier this year, another Egyptian cellular operator, Vodafone Egypt, halted its cooperation with Karabakh Telecom after Baku’s protests.
Nagorno Karabakh is an Azerbaijani region occupied by Armenian forces since a 1994 cease-fire ended a war that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted up to one million Azerbaijanis from their homes. Years of OSCE-brokered peace talks have brought few tangible results.
