Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, Sahiba Gafarova, met with a delegation led by Tariq Humaid Matar Mohd Altayer, First Deputy Speaker of the UAE’s Federal National Council, who is visiting Baku for the 15th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), Azernews reports.
Recalling Azerbaijan’s ongoing presidency of the APA, Speaker Gafarova emphasized the country’s commitment to strengthening the Assembly as a vital platform for Asian parliamentary unity and diplomacy. She highlighted the importance of such parliamentary forums in fostering bilateral cooperation.
Both sides praised the high level of friendly ties between Azerbaijan and the UAE, emphasizing their strategic significance. Speaker Gafarova pointed out the historical, religious, and cultural connections that form a strong foundation for expanding relations, while also noting that reciprocal high-level visits and active political dialogue have driven further cooperation.
Discussions also focused on the role of parliaments in deepening bilateral ties, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to closer collaboration. They highlighted their effective partnership in international parliamentary organizations, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the APA, and the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
Speaker Gafarova commended the UAE Parliament’s active participation in the NAM Parliamentary Network and reiterated Azerbaijan’s contributions to its institutional development, an initiative spearheaded by President Ilham Aliyev.
For his part, First Deputy Speaker Tariq Humaid Mattar Muhammad Al Tayer expressed appreciation for Azerbaijan’s leadership in the APA, describing it as a crucial platform for regional dialogue and cooperation.
The meeting also covered other areas of mutual interest, further reinforcing the strong parliamentary ties between Azerbaijan and the UAE.
