Dutch embassy opens in Azerbaijan

The embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands was opened in
Azerbaijan on Wednesday.
Ed Kronenburg, the Dutch Foreign Ministry’s Secretary-General, told the ceremony that his government had decided to open a diplomatic mission in the country a year ago. He added: "At a time the global financial crisis prevails, the Dutch government’s decision to open an embassy here is a graphic example of the importance attached to Azerbaijan."
Kronenburg noted that deepening bilateral relations is increasingly boosting Dutch companies’ interest to invest in the South Caucasus republic. According to him, the Netherlands’ ties with Azerbaijan will further expand after the European Union and Azerbaijan sign an association agreement on the Eastern Partnership program that aims to boost the bloc’s cooperation with its ex-Soviet partners.
Kronenburg added that once the EU has achieved improved relations among the South Caucasus states, this will move forward a settlement to the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict, a major problem for Azerbaijan, which faces long-standing hostility with Armenia, another regional state.
A photo exhibition was organized in honor of opening the embassy, which presented photos by Dmitry Ermakov. Photos were taken in Azerbaijan in 1872 - 1912.
Photos have been renovated with financial support from the Netherlands government.
The first ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands in Azerbaijan is Jan Lucas van Horne, who will work closely with other ambassadors of EU countries in Baku, as well as with embassies in Tbilisi and Ankara.
