Georgia pursues balanced policy towards Russia: President

By Jamila Babayeva

Georgia managed to pursue a balanced foreign policy towards Russia, President Giorgi Margvelashvili said speaking to the Imedi TV channel.

"I believe that Georgia's foreign policy is successful, as the country pursues a balanced policy in relation to Russia, and this is commendable," he said. "We had successful talks on economic issues at the Prague forum. The trade turnover with Russia rose significantly in the first quarter of 2014."

Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili also believes that Georgia has some modest results in the negotiations with Russia.

"In our talks with Russia we have modest results, for example, Russian market has been opened for the Georgian products, transport links has improved, and there is a development in cultural contacts," he said at the meeting of the members of Harvard Club in Brussels.

On the other hand, he said, despite the progressive and peaceful attempts of the Georgian government Moscow continues provocative actions, including installing barbed wire fences along the line of occupation.

Georgia and Russia, its giant northern neighbor, have maintained no diplomatic relations since a brief war in 2008. Tbilisi broke off relations with Moscow in August 2008 when Moscow crushed a Georgian assault to reassert control over two rebel regions -South Ossetia and Abkhazia- and later recognized the regions. Georgia announced the two unrecognized republics as occupied territories in September 2008.
