Malaysia opens embassy in Baku

Azerbaijan's capital city Baku hosted the official opening ceremony of Malaysian Embassy on September 12.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Mohammad Najib Tun Abdul Razak accompanied by Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov attended the opening ceremony.

Addressing the ceremony, Malaysian Ambassador Dato' Roslan Bin Tan Sri Abdul Rahman hailed diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Malaysia.

"Malaysia today starts its official activities in Azerbaijan," he said.

He said there was mutual interest in and potential opportunities for boosting cooperation between the two countries.

Addressing the event, Prime Minister Abdul Razak said his government praised the opening the Embassy in Azerbaijan. He added that the Malaysian ambassador would serve a three-year tenure in Azerbaijan, expressing confidence this would be beneficial for both countries.

Later, the guests viewed the office building of the Embassy.

Prime Minister Abdul Razak signed the Embassy`s guest book.

On the same day, Prime Minister Artur Rasizade met his Malaysian counterpart.

Rasizade briefed Abdul Razak on economic reforms carried out in Azerbaijan. He said the official visit of the Malaysian Premier would give a push to boosting cooperation between the two countries.

Speaking about the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Rasizade said the problem must be solved within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and the norms of international law.

Abdul Razak, for his turn, praised his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, emphasizing these discussions would give a push to developing bilateral relations.

He said the documents signed during the visit would further expand the cooperation between the two countries.

The two sides also signed three documents on partnership.

On September 12, Malaysian Prime Minister wrapped up his visit to Azerbaijan.

The diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in April, 1993. Azerbaijan opened its embassy in Malaysia in September, 2005.
