Wages to increase in Azerbaijan from September (UPDATE)

Salaries of social security institutions' employees in Azerbaijan will be increased by an average of 10 percent from September.

President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree to increase the wages on August 20 to strengthen social protection of social security institutions' employees financed from the state budget, and to increase the government's attention to them.

According to another presidential order, enacted on August 20, a 10 percent increase of the monthly wages financed from the state budget and defined by the unified tariff system, for workers of agriculture, forestry and fish-breeding farms, melioration and water management facilities, the environment, and hydrometeorology, will go into effect from September 1.

President Aliyev another order on August 21 to increase by ten percent salaries of academic and research institutions, departments and organizations starting from September 1.

According to the Azerbaijan's Ministry of Finance, new increase in wages in Azerbaijan will cover 65,000 people.

"This increase will cover 65,000 people. Salaries for September will be paid taking into account the increase. Earlier, the head of state said, it is expected to sign orders in connection with the increase of pensions, social benefits, grants and other benefits in 2013. These measures on improvement of the financial position and strengtheninig of social protection will benefit the majority of the population," the ministry said.

According to the Ministry, wages of 700,000 state employees and civil servants will increase this year, and some 240 million manats will be spent on this. Thus, the average monthly salary for 2013 is projected at 440.3 manat, and its on-year growth will be 3.9 percent.

According to the State Statistics Committee, the average monthly salary of employed persons in Azerbaijan amounted to 408.8 manats in January-May 2013, which is by 6.8 percent more than in January to May 2012.

By the end of May 2013, the monthly salaries in the oil sector amounted to 1,555 manats, while the non-oil sector salaries made up 378.5 manats, the public sector salaries were 328.5 manats, and the private sector salaries amounted to 534 manats.

The highest salaries were reported in the mining industry, the financial sector of the economy, information and communications, scientific and technical activities, as well as in the construction sector.

According to the Committee, the nominal income of the Azerbaijani population totaled 15.831 billion manats in the first half of the year, which is up by 7.1 percent as compared to January to June 2012.

In the first half of 2013, the nominal income per capita grew by 5.7 percent and amounted to 1,708.8 manats.

Revenues at the disposal of the public after payment of all the mandatory fees amounted to 14.354 billion manats -- 7.1 percent above the figure posted in the same period of 2012. Real income per capita grew by 5.7 percent to 1,549.4 manats.

Further payments to depositors of Azerbaijan Republican Bank of the Savings Bank of the former USSR in this period contributed to the increase of income. Some 93 percent, or 555 million manats of this amount, was paid out over seven months of 2012, and 42 million manats in the first half of 2013.
