Azerbaijani researcher and her driver watched by Iran’s security service - official
Security forces in Iran are closely following every move of foreign nationals that have committed illegal acts and are taking appropriate measures against them, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on Tuesday at the weekly press conference.
He was replying to questions by the Iranian Sahar TV channel about the detention of research fellow of the Institute of Literature named after Nizami Ganjavi of Azerbaijan's National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Orientalist Khalida Khalid, and her driver.
According to Mehmanparast, despite the fact that officials of Iran and Azerbaijan are interested in the development of relations between the two countries, some extremist forces are trying to spoil the good relations between the two countries.
Khalida Khalid and her driver Shamhal Huseynov are currently being supervised by the Iranian Intelligence and Security Service (ETTELAAT), and their case is being investigated, Mehmanparast said.
Khalida Khalid and her assistant Huseynov were arrested on April 30 in Tabriz by members of the Ministry of Information Security and Intelligence of Iran, Iranian media reported earlier.
The Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Tabriz sent a note to the Iranian Foreign Ministry in connection with the detention of the Azerbaijani citizens.
In the note submitted to the ministry, the Consulate General demanded clarification of the details of the detention of Azerbaijani citizens and requested the authorities provide information on their location.
