Prices for 219 drugs more have been approved in the country, the Secretariat of Tariff (price) Council told Trend on August 4. The Tariff Council adopted them at its regular meeting.

In general, the Council approved wholesale and retail prices on 9,850 medicines given their trade names, active ingredients, dosages, pharmaceutical forms, commercial packaging, packaging size and country of origin. 7,347 of them are already on sale at the newly approved rates. Prices for other 2,503 medicinal products will enter into force on September 1 of this year.

Thus, from September 1, drugs that passed the state registration, and prices of which were not approved, can be sold only after the approval of prices for those medicines. Whereas medicinal products whose prices have been approved by the Council and entered into force, should be sold at these prices in all pharmacies across the country.

The process of regulation of prices for medicines that began a year ago is being intensively continued. To date, the Tariff Council has held ten meetings. Prices for 44 percent of drugs decreased more than twice, while the price of a quarter of drugs fell three times. In general, price for more than 90 percent of drugs was reduced.

The decisions and list of medicines are available on the official website of the Tariff (price) Council, www.tariff.gov.az in Resolutions of the Council and Medicines sections.

The government began to pay a special attention to sale of medicines in its pharmacies starting from last September, and Tariff Council began to adjust and approve prices for a number of medicines. Establishing single prices for medicines is aimed to improve the level of medical services provided to the population and combating price gouging.

All medicines imported to Azerbaijan are examined before reaching pharmacies and hospitals. The country bans the import of medicines into the country without a license, permission, or other relevant documents.

A total of 57 percent of medicines registered in Azerbaijan are produced in Europe, 26 percent in the CIS countries, including 12 percent made in Russia. The small proportion is the medicine produced in Asian countries.
