Nazarbayev inks law on confidence building in Kazakh-Kyrgyz state border

Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed the Law "On Ratification of the Agreement between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic on confidence building measures in the border area."

In accordance with the law, the sides will agree on geographical scope, timing and amount of military and special exercises, notify large-scale military activities and troop movements caused by the emergency, establish close friendly contacts between military border agencies, employees of special services, customs and law enforcement agencies in the area of the state border, as well as implement necessary confidence building measures agreed by the parties, Kazakhstan's Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security reported.

The two countries will cooperate in combining forces to maintain stability on the border, to combat illegal activities as well as to notify timely and assist in case of natural disasters, which can cause damage to one of the parties of the agreement.

The sides also agreed on exchange of necessary information, on border procedures, as well as preventing of various hazards in the state border area and the use of measures provided in the agreement.

The agreement is an important contribution to maintaining peace in the Central Asian region. It provides for the strengthening of security, the preservation of peace and stability in the Kazakh-Kyrgyz state border.

The agreement between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan on confidence building measures in the border area was prepared on December 15, 2001.

The initial goal of the agreement was the good-neighborliness and friendship relations development, the conservation of the long-term stability situation, the strengthening of mutual trust in the state border area.

The document is expected to create additional conditions for the development of friendly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation between Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyzstan.
