Uzbek rep appointed UN assembly session's vice-chair

Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the United Nations Diler Khakimov was appointed a deputy chairman of the 68th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations which is scheduled to open in September, the UN News Service reported on June 19.

According to the UN data, Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan was appointed another deputy chairman of the General Assembly session. Together with other representatives of regional groups, they will chair the meetings of the General Assembly in the absence of its chairman.

The General Assembly elected John Ashe from Antigua and Barbuda the chairman of the session.

Diler Khakimov was appointed the Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the United Nations in March. Prior to his appointment to this position, he led the U.S. and America Department of the Foreign Ministry of Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan became a full member of the UN in March, 1992. The main priorities of the cooperation with the UN are the fight against modern threats and security challenges, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, environmental issues, in particular the mitigation of disaster of the Aral Sea, the social and economic development, the protection and promotion of human rights.
