Oil deposits were discovered in Turkey’s Siirt province, Turkish media reported.

Explorations in the province have been carried out for the past two years and the oil was discovered at a depth of 715 meters during explorations.

There is no information about quantity of found oil.

Earlier, the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources told Trend that Turkey expanded the territory for oil and gas exploration operations.

If earlier, there were problems with oil and gas exploration in several eastern provinces, hydrocarbon fields are now being explored in those provinces, the ministry said.

A law permitting oil exploration in forests and national parks came into force in Turkey in April 2014.

The ministry said a total of 56 wells have been drilled as part of exploration of new oil and gas fields in Turkey since 2014, of which 54 are onshore and two are offshore.

Generally, oil production is carried out in predominantly in the southeastern part of Turkey and leading refinery of country is “Turpas” and based on economic assessment, it is unable to meet country’s huge needs in oil and oil products.

Since Turkey's energy security is dependent on foreign energy resources, Turkey has been continuously exploring new hydrocarbon reserves offshore and onshore.

As an option for the solution of this problem, Turkey is considering possibility of establishment of new company for oil and gas exploration abroad, which is expected to engage in oil and gas exploration in Central Asia and Africa.
