Azerbaijan's Janub thermal power plant (TPP) generated some 1.21 billion kilowatt/hours of electricity in the first quarter of 2014, Azerenergy JSC said on April 30.

Azerenergy JSC is engaged in production and distribution of electricity in Azerbaijan.
The power plant generated nearly 434.3 million kilowatt/hours electricity in March, the JSC said.

Janub power plant, commissioned in early July 2013, is essential to strengthening the energy security of the Absheron Peninsula and the southern region of the country. The power station is important from the point of view of ensuring stable operation of the energy transmission and distributing systems.

The TPP generated about 1.17 billion kilowatt/hours of electricity for the first six months of operation (as of January 1, 2014).

The capacity of the station is 780 MW. It works on three types of fuel, namely, gas, diesel fuel and black oil. From this point of view, Janub power station is unique and has no analogue in Eastern Europe or the CIS.

The capacity of Azerbaijan's power generation system has increased by 30 percent over the past five years and currently stands at 7,105 megawatts. This allows to generate about 24 billion kilowatt/hours of electricity per year and subsequently, to export around 2.1 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year.
