A flag-raising ceremony was held in the Pakistani Embassy in Baku on August 14 in connection with the 70th anniversary of the independence of Pakistan.

Pakistani Ambassador to Azerbaijan Saeed Khan Mohmand, addressing the ceremony, said that relations between the peoples of Azerbaijan and Pakistan are developing day by day, APA reports.

“This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. Our relationship has always been strong, it is developing day by day,” the ambassador said.

He noted that these strong, brotherly and warm relations are based on political relations between Azerbaijan and Pakistan.

“Our relations, which are developing in all spheres, are more than a strategic partnership,” Mohmand added.

Pakistan became the second country after Turkey which recognized the independence of Azerbaijan in 1991. The diplomatic relations between two countries were established on June 9, 1992.

The military cooperation takes a special place in Azerbaijan-Pakistan relations. Back in November 2016, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry and Pakistan’s Joint Staff Headquarters signed a plan of bilateral military cooperation in Islamabad. The sides agreed to continue cooperation in carrying out joint military exercises and discussed detailed cooperation in defense sector and joint military production.

Saeed Khan Mohmand also thanked Azerbaijan for the country's position on the Kashmir issue.

“Pakistan, in its turn, takes a principled position on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue. We support Azerbaijan at all forums,” he noted.

Pakistan backed Azerbaijan during and after the Nagorno-Karabakh War and it is the only country that does not recognize Armenia. Pakistan also adopted a resolution strongly condemning the genocide against the civilian population of Khojaly, which was committed by Armenian armed forces.
