Aliyev: Azerbaijan contributes to Europe’s energy security [UPDATE]

By Vugar Khalilov

President Ilham Aliyev has said that Azerbaijan contributed to Europe's energy security through alternative sources and lines, Azertag reported on December 14.

He made the remarks at the North Atlantic Council’s meeting that was held in Brussels, Belgium, the report added.

Aliyev stressed that as a reliable partner in Europe’s energy supply, Azerbaijan exports oil to 20 NATO member countries.

He underlined that four countries of the Alliance, including Turkey, were importing gas from Azerbaijan and there were opportunities to expand this geography in the future.

Aliyev gave detailed information about Azerbaijan's role in the region, especially the new geopolitical situation that emerged in the region following the 44-day war with Armenia. He emphasized Azerbaijan's readiness to start peace talks with Armenia, as well as preparations for the delimitation and demarcation of borders.

Furthermore, the topics such as Azerbaijan-NATO cooperation and the development of practical cooperation, Azerbaijan's contribution to the Alliance's Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, the development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO in the planning analysis process, and other programs were discussed at the meeting.

NATO member states have once again expressed their support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and inviolability of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized borders.

It was noted that this position had been repeatedly stated in NATO Summit documents. NATO member states stressed Azerbaijan’s contribution to the Resolute Support mission. NATO officials highlighted the Azerbaijani peacekeepers’ role in the evacuation of over 120,000 civilians via Kabul airport. Azerbaijan's involvement in the operation from 2002 to 27 August 2021 and the fact that it was one of the last countries to leave Afghanistan were underlined at the meeting.

The development of the operational military coordination between the Azerbaijani and NATO troops was also stressed.

The sides also exchanged views on issues of mutual interest and answered questions from representatives of member states.
