Pop fails to sparkle in women's individual epee
2015 European bronze medallist unable to make knockout stage
Romania's Simona Pop, a bronze medallist at the recent European championships, made a surprise early exit from the women's individual epee Fencing competition at the European Games on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old admitted that she had failed to "wake up" in the morning qualifying sessions at Crystal Hall 3.
Pop won just two of her six round-robin pool games and failed to reach the knockout stage, finishing equal sixth at the bottom of her group.
"It was all my own fault. It was pretty stupid of me to go out so early, " she said. "I just didn't wake up."
The competition continues on Tuesday.
