Baku to host international wrestling tournament

An international wrestling tournament commemorating January 20 martyr Mushvig Isayev will be held in Baku on January 16-17.

The tournament will bring together wrestlers from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia, Azertac reported.

International wrestling tournament aims to increase the sport skills of junior wrestlers, to identify promising sportsmen.

The junior wrestlers will compete in 48, 55, 65, 80 freestyle weight classes.

Wrestlers, born in 2001-2002 will compete in the Greco-Roman wrestling competitions in weight category of 92 kilograms.

The winners will be awarded with diplomas and medals.

Wrestling remains the most popular sport in the county and is overseen by the National Wrestling Federation, which was established in 1993.

The Rio Games opened a new page in wrestling for Azerbaijan. The country became one of only two nations ever to increase the number of medals achieved in five consecutive Games.

Azerbaijan left Rio de Janeiro with a total of 18 medals. Nine of these medals were distributed to the Azerbaijani team in wrestling.

The Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling have rich history and unique traditions. The elements of national wrestling can be encountered on the Gobustan rocks, in folk and classical literature, and sagas.
