A new polyethylene plant in the Sumgayit Chemical Industrial Park will meet Azerbaijan’S domestic needs. About 30-40 percent of the production of the polyethylene plant will be designed for the home market.

The statement came from a senior official of the project SOCAR Polymer earlier this week. According to him, a tender process has begun for the selection of EPC-contractor, who will hand over the plant on a turnkey basis.

"The commissioning of the polyethylene plant is scheduled for the end of 2018. By the end of this summer we are going to determine the EPC-contractor," said the representative of SOCAR Polymer.

The British company INEOS was selected as licensor of the polyethylene production project, he noted.

"The plant will produce high-density polyethylene, as well as such specific product as PE-100, which is used for pipe products (sewer, gas, water pipes), that is able to withstand a lot of pressure. We chose INEOS as this company is an innovator in the application of this technology," said the representative.

He added that about 30-40 percent of the production will be directed to local needs.

"We will completely satisfy the demand in the country and the rest of the products will be exported. There are no specific areas of export yet, but there is a preliminary marketing plan that includes the CIS countries, Western Europe, and Turkey, etc. SOCAR Trading will be engaged in the sales of products of this plant," SOCAR Polymer said.

The project SOCAR Polymer is implemented in Sumgayit Chemical Industrial Park. This project will produce 180,000 tons of polypropylene and 120,000 tons of polyethylene per year.

The total cost of the project is around 700 million euros.

The Sumgayit Chemical Industrial Park, locating near capital Baku, is one of the largest ongoing regional projects in the chemical industry. The park is considering about 20 investment projects, related mainly to the production of packaging materials, construction, medical products and other types of chemical products, including polymers.
