Work on the construction of Turkey's first nuclear power plant Akkuyu in will begin in early 2014, Director General of Akkuyu NGS A.S. Alexander Superfin said in an interview with the Vatan newspaper.

He said the preparation of a report on the project's impact on the environment will be completed in May 2013.

"It is expected that the production of electricity at Akkuyu NPP will begin from 2020. In the first stage the NPP will produce electricity with its capacity of 4,800 MW," Superfin said.

Turkey's share in the construction of the NPP will be $7.5 billion of the total cost at $20 billion, he said. More than $1 billion have been already invested in the project, and in the coming months, investments will be increased up to $2.4 billion.

The Akkuyu nuclear power plant will be built on the Russian project which includes the construction of four power units with VVER-1200 reactors. The agreement on the construction of the station was signed in May 2010.

The capacity of each unit will reach 1200 MW, while the total capacity is 4,800 MW. It is assumed that the units will be commissioned in sequence at intervals of one year.
