Ukrainian MP apologises to Azerbaijanis
Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada (parliament) member Fedor Negoy has apologised to Azerbaijanis in connection with his recent statements, the Congress of Ukrainian Azerbaijanis told Trend news agency on Thursday.
MP Negoy, elected from Kherson region, said last week that Azerbaijanis and Georgians trading on the markets is like a 'malignant growth of the country'.
He spoke to the Congress of Ukrainian Azerbaijanis over the phone and said that his words were misinterpreted by journalists. He added that he did not want to offend Azerbaijanis among whom he has many friends.
"Azerbaijanis are an honest, hard-working people," he said.
MP Negoy promised that on his return from Kiev to Kherson, he will hold a press conference to bring clarity to the issue. Chairman of the Congress of Ukrainian Azerbaijanis Rovshan Tagiyev said that this issue can be resolved if the MP organises a press conference and apologizes.
"We believe that xenophobia in any form is unacceptable and must be stopped," Tagiyev said.
The Congress of Ukrainian Azerbaijanis proposed to take measures against the MP during a roundtable at the Ukrainian Diplomatic Academy.
