Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan to establish transport corridor committee

Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan discussed several isues toward the establishment of a committee for the development of international transport route, the Azerbaijan Railways reported on April 20.

A delegation headed by Javid Gurbanov, the chairman of the Azerbaijan Railways met with Satlik Satlikov, Turkmen deputy prime minister, as part of their visit to Ashgabat.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the “Azerbaijan Railway”, the “Georgian Railway”, the “Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company” and Baku International Sea Trade Port.

The meeting discussed issues related to the creation of favorable conditions for cargo transit together with Turkmenistan along with the international transport corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA). The sides also touched upon development of international transport route among TRACECA member-countries.

Around 23.4 million tons of cargo was transported via the Eurasian transport corridor (TRACECA, the Europe-Caucasus-Asia) through the Azerbaijani territory in January-May 2014.

TRACECA is an international transport program involving the European Union and 13 member-states of the Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia regions. It includes Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Moldova, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.

The program has a permanent Secretariat, financed by the European Commission, in Baku, Azerbaijan, and a regional office in Odessa, Ukraine. Since 2009 the organization has been entirely financed by its member countries.
