Georgian parliament approves amendments to Electoral Code

The Georgian parliament approved the amendments to the Electoral Code of the country during the first reading on July 25.

The minority faction supports the amendments that maximally limit the opportunity to use the administrative resources during the election period.

Georgian Deputy Parliamentary Speaker Manana Kobakhidze said the amendments set that a person participating in the elections must resign before the campaign. At the same time, the document bans voters to vote without the biometric registration.

"This eliminates the possibility of election falsification, when one person had several identity cards and voted at different constituencies," she said. "According to the amendments, a party gaining 3 percent of votes will be provided with financing. A candidate participating in the elections will receive 1 million lari to cover the costs in case of getting 10 percent of votes."
