IAEA chief urges Iran to engage with agency’s inspectors

The IAEA cannot guarantee that all nuclear material in Iran is used for peaceful purposes, IAEA chief Chief Yukiya Amano said while addressing a session of the agency's 35-nation board on Sept. 9.

"Iran has not provided sufficient cooperation to give us an opportunity reasonably convinced of absence of undeclared nuclear materials and activities. Thus, the agency cannot come to the conclusion that all nuclear material in Iran is used for peaceful purposes," Amano said, RIA Novosti reported.

He also noted that it was "essential and urgent" for Iran to engage with his inspectors on their concerns about suspected Iranian nuclear bomb research and to provide access to a key military site.

IAEA has several times requested to visit the military site Parchin, but Iran hasn't allowed IAEA officials to enter the site.

Amano said that the organization was committed to work constructively with Iranian President Rouhani's government to "resolve outstanding issues by diplomatic means".

Rouhani has officially assigned the Foreign Ministry to deal with the country's nuclear issues with both the UN nuclear watchdog IAEA and the P5+1 group.

The new round of negotiations between Iran and the IAEA will be held in Vienna on Sept.27.

World powers are monitoring the IAEA-Iran talks for any signs as to whether Tehran, facing intensifying sanctions pressure, may be prepared to finally start tackling mounting international concerns about its nuclear activity.

The West suspects Tehran's nuclear program may be aimed at developing nuclear weapons capability, but Iran insists it is purely for peaceful purposes.

Iran reiterates that its main demand is that its right to uranium enrichment, as stipulated in the NPT, be recognized.
