Baku to host international conference on mountain sports

An international conference titled "The valuable role of mountaineering and climbing sports for developing sustainable tourism in mountainous regions of the world such as Caucasus" will be held in Baku on October 24-25.

The event is organized by the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) in cooperation with the IDEA Company, Western University and Azerbaijan Mountaineering and Extreme Sports Federations Association, and Air and Extreme Sports Federation of Azerbaijan (FAIREX).

The conference is held under the UIAA's Mountain Protection Award program. The award is granted for specific measures on protection of the environment for the development of mountain tourism.

Different companies, individuals, associations, and various municipalities can participate in this program, which aims at the implementation of specific tasks such as public education, the spread of mountain sports, the development of eco-tourism, and joint protection of environment.

The conference in Baku will mull the preparation of effective marketing programs to develop mountain tourism, the revision of effective policies and practices to protect mountains as well as the active participation of tourists in the monitoring of the mountains through scientific programs.

Those who would participate in the event are but not limited to Peter Farkas, the vice-president of UIAA, Linda McMillan, the President of UIAA Mountain Protection Commission, Sophie Gerard, the UIAA program coordinator, Ronald Gallaher, an international expert on geology as well as local government organizations, scientific research and educational institutions, representatives of civil society.
