Consortium with Azerbaijani company to construct gas power station in Malta

Maltese state-owned utility company Enemalta has selected ElectroGas Malta, a German, Azerbaijani and Maltese consortium, to construct a new gas power station and related gas supply infrastructure, Trend news agency reported on October 14 citing Maltese media.
German giant Siemens will be involved as a leading developer with a 20 percent share in the project. Other investors are Azerbaijan's state energy company SOCAR with 20 percent stake, UK's Gasol with 30 percent and GEM, a group of Maltese investors that includes Gasan and Tumas Group with 30 percent.
The consortium will convert the Delimara BWSC extension (extension project of Delimara Power Station in the southeast of Malta) to run on natural gas as well as construct an onshore regasification facility and a floating storage unit by 2015.
Malta's Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi said that ElectroGas Malta is truly a world-class bidder, combining foreign expertise and local investment.
The company will also provide electricity to Enemalta for 18 years and will procure natural gas at a fixed price for the next five years.
"The price will then be revised accordingly, but will still be cheaper than the price offered by oil-powered plants. The price will be revealed after an eventual appeal process is over," he said.
The new gas-operated plant will generate 200 MW of electricity.
