New head of Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences elected

Vice President of Azerbaijan's National Academy of Sciences, Akif Alizadeh, who was the acting president of the academy after the death of the previous president Mahmud Karimov, was elected to the position of President of the Academy as a result of elections held at the general meeting of the Academy on Wednesday.

Akif Alizadeh was born on February 25, 1934 to a family of famous Azerbaijani doctors Agamehdi and Afshan Alizadeh. In 1957, he was admitted to the Institute of Geology of the National Academy of Sciences. At the age of 35 he defended his doctoral dissertation by becoming one of the youngest highly qualified professionals in the USSR.

Since 1960 he has been a member of the All-Union Society of Palaeontology, Chairman of the Caucasian Regional Stratigraphic Commission and a member of the Scientific Council of the USSR on the problems of the biosphere.
