EOC president takes over flag of European Games

The president of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), Patrick Hickey took over the flag of the European Games from Azerbaijan’s minister of youth and sports, the Baku 2015 chief executive officer, Azad Rahimov at an event held on June 28.

During the event, held on the last day of the first-ever European Games, Hickey said Baku has become a benefactor of the European Games in a little more than 30 months, according to a message from the Baku 2015 Operating Committee.

He said the biggest contribution of the Baku 2015 is that a foundation was laid for all the subsequent European Games.

Minister Rahimov, in turn, said he is handing over the flag of the European Games to the EOC president in a special presentation box.

He said inside the box there are commemorative signs for the city that will host the next Games, as well as the commemorative signs for the European Games for the next 100 years.

The event was attended by the representatives of the EOC Executive Committee, the EOC Coordination Commission, the directors of the Baku 2015 Operating Committee, as well as 12,500 volunteers of the Games.

The First European Games that kicked off in Baku June 12 will wrap up this evening. There was a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports.

More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe came to Baku to represent their nations over 17 days of competition. Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
