Azerbaijan, US stress importance of expanding energy cooperation

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has received Charles Kupchan, Senior Director for European Affairs at the US National Security Council, Azertac state news agency reported.

The sides discussed the development of the Azerbaijani-US bilateral ties in a variety of fields.

They expressed satisfaction with the establishment of partnership relations between the two countries in a number of fields. The parties stressed the importance of expanding energy cooperation, which has a rich history, with the support of the US.

Touching upon the fight against international terrorism and cooperation in the field of security, the sides noted the significance of successful activity of Azerbaijani servicemen as part of the peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan.

They also exchanged views over the current state and prospects of democratic processes in Azerbaijan.

During the conversation, the parties discussed the regional situation, and the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

They also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation even further.

After Azerbaijan gained independence in 1991, Washington established diplomatic relations with Baku in 1992.

Azerbaijan and the United States enjoy a strong strategic partnership founded on shared values and interests. Today, Azerbaijan remains a staunch ally of the U.S. in its fight against international terrorism. Azerbaijani troops have been serving in Afghanistan shoulder to shoulder with U.S soldiers, just as they did previously in the Balkans and in Iraq.

Economic and commercial relations are also developing dynamically. The U.S. is one of the largest investors in Azerbaijan.
