The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should be resolved not militarily, but by peaceful means, Chairman of the Global Partnerships Forum Amir Dossal has said at a meeting with students at the American Center in Baku.

Commenting on the failure by Armenia to implement four UN Security Council resolutions on Nagorno-Karabakh, Dossal said that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is not a top priority for the international community.

"Today, the attention of the world community is accented on the Syrian issue. A lot of people are being killed in Syria every day," Dossal said.

Then, Amir Dossal told about the history of establishment of the UN and its agencies. He recalled that Azerbaijan was elected for a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. He also spoke of the success of Azerbaijan in the UN Security Council.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
